The ply's teardown threw. Its pumps are stopped and it is out of the composite regardless.

Covers both teardown paths, because that sentence is true of both: a ply dropped from the desired set while the composite runs on, and every ply the composite's own close() tears down (#1861) — which drains the live set and cancels the pumps before it closes anything.
